A maternity photo session is a beautiful way to capture the glow and excitement of your pregnancy, creating timeless memories of this special time in your life. Planning ahead can ensure that you feel relaxed, confident, and ready for the camera. Here are five essential tips to help you prepare for a maternity photo session that you’ll treasure forever!

1. Timing is Everything

The timing of your maternity session is one of the most important aspects to consider. Ideally, most photographers recommend scheduling your shoot between 28 and 34 weeks of pregnancy. At this stage, your baby bump is typically rounded and noticeable, but you're not yet feeling too uncomfortable. Of course, every pregnancy is different, so feel free to discuss with your photographer the best timing based on your body and preferences. This ensures you’ll get the most flattering photos while still feeling comfortable and energetic.

2. Choose the Perfect Location

The setting of your maternity session plays a huge role in the overall feel of the photos. Choosing a location that has sentimental value to you is my top suggestion to clients. Sapir and Dan chose to do their maternity photos were they held their elopement.

3. Select Flattering Outfits

What you wear during your maternity shoot is key to making you feel confident and beautiful. Choose outfits that highlight your bump and reflect your personal style. For a winter maternity session, something that is comfortable but also warm is key! For other seasons; dresses, flowy skirts with light, airy fabrics like chiffon, silk, or lace for a soft, ethereal look are a great option. Additionally, choose colors that complement your skin tone and the environment of your shoot. If you’re planning to have your partner or other family members involved, coordinate your outfits to ensure everyone looks cohesive without being too "matchy."

4. Prepare Your Hair and Makeup

Professional hair and makeup are a great way to enhance your natural beauty and feel extra pampered on your special day. While it’s not a must, many expectant moms find that having their hair and makeup done professionally boosts their confidence. Opt for a natural, glowing makeup look to accentuate your features, and consider soft waves or a polished updo for your hair. If you’re doing your own makeup, keep it fresh and simple to achieve a radiant, pregnancy glow. Make sure you feel comfortable in your look—confidence is key for beautiful photos!
